Hendrik and Anna’s children

Some 286  years after Harm Niet bought this half house in which  daughter Anna and husband Hendrik Aalders were to live in for 130 guilders .  In A D 2009 ,Henry and Nemia Aalders from Australia met Cees Alders and Gijs van der Poel and spouses ,Arij Hendriksz descendants , and local historian Jan Morren met right in front of it.  They took this picture in front of this house still standing where it was built .The current occupant offered the property for 1.5 million Euros .

Hendrik and Anna’s  three children -Leendert Aalders ,1774- 1848

Hendrik born in  1774 , Maria in 1776 and  Jan in 1777.                                                                                                             Maria and Jan were baptised in the R K Church at the Ossenhooftsteeg in Haarlem

[002] Shortly after the birth of Jan ,his mother Anna died

In 1776 Hendrik and  Anna sold  the half house to  Covert Veldhoven, the publican for  500 guilders  .                            Anna   died ca 1776-78  . In any event the  widower Hendrik and children moved to Haarlem.                                             The house once owned by Hendrik and Anna  is still occupied and stands at 80 Bloemendaalseweg ,the currently renamed part of the Jan Gijsenvaart . Shortly after the birth of Jan ,his mother Anna died .                                              In later days the house has been renovated and the 2 half houses are now one .The current occupant offered the property to Henry Aalders and Cees Alders for 1.5 million Euros

Hendrik and Anna had a son Hendrik Aaldersz (born 1774) who  married Agie Meyer in 1797 in Velsen .                        Their daughter Joanna Alders born 1798 married Johan de Vries .She died in Haarlem .                                             Another daughter Adriaentje Alders, born in Velsen in 1801 ,died 6 months before her 7th birthday

Their daughter  Maria Aaldersz  1776-1829 , married  Willem Joosten in Haarlem in 1796 . There were 8 Joosten children .

Another son Jan Aalders  born 1777 baptised R C Church Ossenhooftsteeg Haarlem .( Jan Morren)    He died in 1719 .

In 1778  Hendrik Aalders (born 1748) remarried and took as his wife Maria van der Spek ,born in the Hague .

This marriage produced 8 children. These were Adrian in 1779Anna in 1780, Helena in 1783, Leendert in 1785, Anna in 1787 3 more Anna’s born in 1782 and 1783 respectively and  Maria born in 1789. All were baptised in Haarlem at the St Bavo station.

Adriaan  Aalders son of Hendrik and Maria (Marijtje) van der Spek was born in Haarlem in 1779 and died in Velsen on 9 May 1997 .

Leendert and the Anna of 1787  blossomed into adulthood .

Anna of 1787   married Jan Grove in 1810 .  They had a family

Later Hendrik and Maria   returned to Velsen ,where Maria died on 27May 1808 followed by Hendrik in 1810 . They were  quite an impoverished couple and were supported by assistance provided by the church,  similar to our food-stamps programme

Leendert Aalders married Catharina Teunisz Reijerse in 1806 in the Catholic Church of Schoten. Leendert is known to have returned to Velsen .At the time Leendert lived somewhere at the Jan Gijsenvaart ,the exact location is unknown. Catharina is known under a variety of names ie  Catharina Reijersz, Catharina Reijers, Trijntje Reijers, Reintje Reijers or Catharina Teunisz , after her father Teunisse Reijers. Probably patronims were used and interchanged with actual family names .

In 1822 Leendert Aalders was a witness at the Court at Bloemendaal to correct an incorrect name of his mother ,Maria van der Spek  entered upon his marriage with Catharina Teunisz Reijerse . Shortly after his marriage , Leendert started farming .

The Velsen Notaries Archive as early as 1812 mentions Leendert as buyer of real estate , firewood, grass, seeds, potatoes ,bulbs, chairs, a sharpening stone, livestock, a horse and other chattels and land interests . Besides he leases a paddock at the Oostlaan in Velsenbroek, land to grow potatoes , and secondary grass ,ie the returning grass after the paddock was mowed for hay (supposedly of inferior food value ) . Clearly he was satisfied to graze his livestock on secondary grasses . He leased and rented land to raise his livestock ,but there is no record of him owning land or a house in Velsen proper.

We may assume that he leased the farm at what was once  Homestead “Velserhof”,which he bought  in 1817.           The  farm comprised  and area of  49000 sq meters bought from Maarten Scheepers , farmer from Santpoort for a mere 1000 guilders . In  1817  Martinus departs for Hees near  ’s Hertogenbosch and so he on-sells to Leendert Aalders  for  1000 guilders.  The archives now show how Leendert Aalders becomes Leendert Alders .The farm is described as house plus farmyard and 5 Morgen of paddock or arable land .under registration number 115 .

a "Morgen" is a measure of land in use in the Netherlands and parts of Germany at that time .It equates an amount of land that could conveniently be ploughed in a morning  .

(1 Morgen = 2500 Square Meters = 0.25 Hectares = 26909 Sq feet (approx) = 2990 Square Yards (approx)

Leendert  conducted a mixed farming venture .                                                                                                                         He also grew potatoes and grain In 1825 he bought bulbs In 1828 he buys from  Jacob Kuiper the mayor of  Spaarnwoude the  lease of the ”Brederoder” and the right to receive 10% of a grain harvest for 44 guilders. Jacob Kuiper  did not like collecting under it personally Hence he offered that right for sale each year presumably at a commission . Hence it was up to Leendert to collect under this right to retrieve his investment and make money out of it . Each year shortly before harvest ,the farmer was obliged to have the harvest value assessed and after harvesting , 10% of that assessment became payable to the “Right owner” .

Leendert bought hay clearly because there was not enough feed to give to his cattle stabled in winter . In 1821 he rented 2 more paddocks at the “Oostlaan”and again we find records of him doing this in 1828 . He sells the surplus hay .

The marriage with Treintje Teunisz Reijerse produces two children ,Willemijntje Alders in 1816 and  Hendrik Alders in  1828.

On  the evening of  21 May 1844  Leendert dies aged  58 at Santpoort.   He did live long enough to be at his daughter  Willemijntje’s wedding on 11 Feb that year with  Joannes Kaasenbrood.
